getting married

What were your parents doing at your age?

Married. Haha, my mum was.

My mum told us stories of how her childhood was and the change she experienced when she met my dad — who was her brother’s friend. Now that I think about it, her brother must have trusted his friend so much to hand his sister over to him — most guys don’t allow their friends to be with their siblings, they play the “my sibling is also your sibling” card.

They started dating when she was 18 years old — fair enough, a full-blown adult. They were young and in love — if you ask about them now, they still act like teenage lovers. They make me desire nothing but young love — a love we never grow up from, a love where we both feel safe and secure, a love that strengthens, a love that understands, a love that embraces evolving change, a love that is patient and kind, a love that is not afraid to be vulnerable, a love that can pass through fire and water without being overcome.

They took the risk when she was 20 years old — they got married and started a family. I love that they didn’t bring children into the picture until about 4 years later. I believe the time they spent as young couples or newlyweds helped them to bond, just the two of them — I know most people love their wives because “she is the mother of my child” and that’s not good enough. My father will always say “I love my wife more than you and after you, it’ll still be her”. Ouch!

And all I ever wanted was to be like her. I said I would get married at 21 years old and my first boyfriend will be my husband. Oops! I’m turning 22 years old next week — my first boyfriend is now a stranger, haha, and I’m very single.

If you ask me if I want to be like my mother at my age, this is what I’ll tell you,

I admire her bravery and love that she had her love life figured out but that’s not my priority right now — work and academics are still a lot.

Write you soon.
