YOUNG AND FREE?

Years ago, I wasn’t permitted to go out alone, ride a bike without supervision, watch some tv shows, and even carry out a thorough self-care routine because I wasn’t “old enough” to do those things. It felt like I was boxed in – like some sort of controlled person. I fantasized about what adulthood will be like; freedom, comfort, joy, fulfillment, and so many other beautiful feelings. I couldn’t wait to finally be an adult – why didn’t someone tell me 😦

I spoke with my peers and apparently, this was a lifetime we all looked forward to. You finally get to do what you want without any choking supervision or question. Live that dream life!

Years passed, and the zealous, enthusiastic children, waiting for “adulthood” are now grown young people accountable for their thoughts, actions, decisions, and even expenses. Who thought it’d be this difficult? Where are the aunties and uncles we admired from a distance, those alive and free young people we sought to be like? What aren’t we doing right? Or is this a different adulthood, because…?

Well…

The real adult view of freedom is not what we envisioned – doing whatever you please.

what then can we call freedom?

Freedom is taking responsibility for your actions, being calculating, independent, strong-willed, diplomatic, brave, courageous, and every other possible synonym you could think of. Freedom is intentionally being the real you because you have nothing to prove to anyone. It is growing from a point of randomness to specificity. Freedom is paying attention to the other view of a situation and carefully choosing what you’d go for. Freedom is owning your life; being in charge and being fully responsible for every decision.

The misconception of freedom has made several people think they aren’t having a part in freedom, and that has birth statements like, “Adulthood na scam”. But if you ask them if they’d love to go back to childhood, they’ll scream loud “Noo”. That’s not them being confused about what they want, it’s just the misconception.

young and free?

You have an insight at this point regarding this question.

Are you truly free? Taking full responsibility for your life.

Are you not yet free? You aren’t in control yet.

Or are you scared to embrace freedom? You’re nervous if you’d do great or make the wrong decisions? You never know until you try. It’s okay to make mistakes, they help you learn.

Embrace freedom, explore freedom, and be free. You are young and energetic, I know you’ll do great.

“The world belongs to the energetic.”

  1. Actually the slang adulthood na scam according to one my mentors”she said it’s for people that are not ready to take responsibility”.it’s not an easy task being an adult , consistency and commitment like you said crowned with God makes it a ride to wanna try☺️☺️.

  3. If I didn’t learn/realise a thing from this blog post – which is absolutely impossible -, I learnt/realised that Freedom in adulthood is moving from a point of randomness to a point of specificity.

  4. Praize, you’re such an amazing writer that I will always say over again. 👏🏾👏🏾

Yes, we had expectations when we were little and, I think they were the wrong notions towards life, because we had fantasized about how life would be for us and we ran with those imaginations for years until adulthood began to teach us the truth, i.e. owning your life, choices and decisions…it’s called free-will (freedom).

    Thanks again for this. 👍🏾🤗📝
